Can you drink wine on a diet?
November, 2016 Filed in: Wine serving
We all know that if we are trying to shed a few calories we need to reduce the amount of calories we consume. We also know that wine does have quite a few calories; in fact a glass of wine typically has 110 grams. However a 1991 Harvard study followed over a 138,000 men and women, found increasing their alcohol consumption did not increase their weight. In fact, amongst women they decreased their body weight by 15% considering the increased calories they consumed through consumer calories in their wine. Men did not see the same effect. So why, you may ask.
Well the scientists felt one reason might be that wine is processed by the liver and not in the stomach. The alcohol is turned into acetate, which the body utilizes before it metabolizes fat. They thought that because men metabolize alcohol differently the same may not be true. Several studies indicate that 1-2 glasses of wine should not adversely affect your weight. Having said that, in all cases medical experts, such as dietitians are best charged with helping you on the diet front.
